Tier 1 Game Predictions (80% SU Last Week)

#23TCU (1-0) @ Arkansas (1-0) – 3:30PM ET, CBS

Last year these two played in a heart-throbbing, double overtime thriller that ended in a 41-38 Arkansas victory. Just one year later, the matchup looks very different. TCU’s defense should be back to the Gary Patterson standard after a down year in 2016, and in last week’s 63-0 beatdown of Jackson State, quarterback Kenny Hill went 18/23 with 206 yards and four touchdowns. Now, it was against an FCS team, but the Horned Frogs looked great. This game won’t be the shootout last year’s Week 2 showdown was, both defenses are going to be a lot better, and this is a tossup, it’s my #25 team on the road against my #28 team. Austin Allen is going to be excellent at quarterback for Arkansas, but on defense I have to give the edge to Patterson, and I see the Horned Frogs squeaking out a close win.

Prediction: TCU 28, Arkansas 27
ATS Pick: Arkansas +3

#13Auburn (1-0) @ #3Clemson (1-0) – 7PM ET, ESPN

I picked Clemson to make the playoff in the preseason, and last week, they backed up my claim, crushing Kent State 52-3. The voters noticed, and moved the Tigers into their top four as well. Kelly Bryant played like Deshaun Watson, rushing for 77 yards, and passing for 236 more, and even the untrained eye could see that Clemson O-Line was tremendous, giving Bryant time to make reads, which he will need against an Auburn secondary that is a big step up from Kent State. Auburn looked good in week one as well, the defense shut down Georgia Southern’s option, and the ground game looked incredible, racking up over 300 yards… but. Jarrett Stidham had a meh game against the Eagle defense, throwing just 14/24, against Clemson, that type of inaccuracy is going to lead to turnovers. Clemson is going to pick up a signature win in Death Valley, but Auburn will look good enough in defeat that they stay in the playoff race.

Prediction: Clemson 34, Auburn 27
ATS Pick: Clemson -6

#15Georgia (1-0) @ #24Notre Dame (1-0) – 7:30PM ET, NBC

Partially overshadowed by the injury to Deondre Francois, Georgia QB Jacob Eason also went out with an injury in week one. Eason should be back at some point this season, but for at least this week, the Bulldogs will hand the reigns over to true freshman Jake Fromm. Some former quarterback’s (most notably Kirk Herbstreit) see Fromm as a better quarterback than Eason, but it will be tough for the true freshman, who is still learning the offense, to make his first start on the road against Notre Dame. Georgia’s two headed monster at runningback is going to be great, with Nick Chubb and Sony Michel splitting carries, but the Irish are at home, and that defense, which dominated Temple in week one, is going to take advantage of Fromm’s mistakes, I’ve got Notre Dame.

Prediction: Notre Dame 27, Georgia 24
ATS Pick: Georgia +4

#5Oklahoma (1-0) @ #2Ohio State (1-0) – 7:30PM ET, ABC

First up, props to Oklahoma and Ohio State for scheduling a home-and-home rather than one neutral site game (cough cough Bama-FSU). Last year when these two teams played in Norman, the Buckeyes dominated from start to finish, and picked up a convincing 45-24 win. Now, Baker Mayfield (19-20, 329 yards, 3 touchdowns in limited action against UTEP) will get his shot at revenge against an Ohio State secondary that got consistently beat in man coverage last week against Indiana. Oklahoma is not Indiana, this will be a war for Ohio State, especially the Buckeye defense, and I fully expect Oklahoma to be up at the half, but Ohio State’s ground and pound was able to put away Indiana last week, and while this one will be much closer, another big game from JK Dobbins, and the home crowd, will cement Ohio State as the #2 team in the land.

Prediction: Ohio State 34, Oklahoma 31
ATS Pick: Oklahoma +7.5

#14Stanford (1-0) @ #6USC (1-0) – 8:30PM ET, FOX

Of the Big  Four games for this week, this is the one I’m least sure on. I dropped USC from 4 to 10 in my latest top 25 after the Trojans struggled with Western Michigan. That’s normal, I move teams up and down a lot in the early stages of the season, and USC will certainly be able to earn their way back if they can pick up a win here. Stanford played a near perfect game against Rice in Week Zero, and the Cardinal are coming off of a bye. Sam Darnold had a below average game, tossing two picks with no touchdowns against Western Michigan, all signs point to a Stanford upset on the road, but I’ve just got this feeling. A feeling that that performance lit a fire under Sam Darnold, and that it lit a fire under the USC defense that god shredded on the ground last week. Stanford is going to pound the defense, but as long as they can get to third down and force Keller Chryst to throw the ball, the Trojans can force some bad throws. Sam Darnold and Ronald Jones are going to combine for over 350 yards, and USC is going to get the win in what could be a preview of the Pac-12 Title Game come December.

Prediction: USC 34, Stanford 27
ATS Pick: USC -6
