GRADING EVERY DUNK FROM THE 2016 DUNK CONTEST

FIRST ROUND

Will Barton Dunk #1

What it was: Between the legs, reverse dunk (2 hands)

Grade: B+

Why: While it was a fantastic dunk, we’ve seen it so many times before it just wasn’t that special.

Andre Drummond Dunk #1

What it was: Self alley-oop, double clutch (1 hand)

Grade: C

Why: It took him multiple tries to get this dunk right and the end result wasn’t very spectacular

Aaron Gordon Dunk #1

What it was: 360 through the legs

Grade: A-

Why: Once again it was a great dunk but like Barton’s dunk we’ve seen it before

Zach Lavine Dunk #1

What it was: Self alley oop, behind the back, underneath the rim and finish with his right hand (Just watch it)

Grade: A+

Why: Have you watched this dunk?

Andre Drummond Dunk  #2

What it was: Steve Nash heel-flicks the ball up in the air for a right handed reverse windmill

Grade: C-

Why: While it was a cool concept, the dunk took like 8 tries

Will Barton Dunk #2

What it was: 3 missed dunks

Grade: F

Why: He missed all three tries, automatic F in my books

Aaron Gordon Dunk #2

What it was: Jumping over Stuff the Magic Dragon, grabbing the ball off of it’s head and going between the legs

Grade: A+

Why: It did take two tries, but it was a very difficult dunk so I’ll give him a break there, other than that it was perfect

Zach Lavine Dunk #2

What it was: Alley-oop tomahawk dunk from near the free throw line

Grade: A

Why: I knock this slightly below Gordon’s dunk for the fact that despite the fact that he jumped from the free throw line, it was just a normal alley-oop and we see those in a game.

FINAL ROUND

*Andre Drummond and Will Barton were eliminated*

Aaron Gordon Dunk #3

What it was: Stuff the Magic Dragon spun in a circle on a hover board, holding the ball out, Gordon grabbed the ball off of Stuff, while spinning, then Gordon did a 360 of his own, cupping with his right hand and putting his left hand behind his head

Grade: A+

Why: If there was such a thing as an A++, this would be it

Zach Lavine Dunk #3

What it was: Self alley-oop 360 with the ball cupped in his right hand

Grade: A

Why: It was the same dunk Gordon did, just without the spinning hoverboard.

Aaron Gordon Dunk #4

What it was: Gordon jumps over Stuff, goes under his legs and finishes with his left. It’s insane how he got his butt and legs high enough to get over the dragon.

Grade: A+

Why: Dunk of the Year, wait no, Dunk of the Last 5 Years (Quick note: This clinches it, if I was the real grader of the dunk contest, Gordon would win right here)

Zach Lavine Dunk #4

What it was: Windmill dunk from free throw line

Grade: A+

Why: IT WAS A WINDMILL DUNK FROM THE FREE THROW LINE

DUNK-OFF ROUND 1

Aaron Gordon Dunk #5

What it was: Alley-Oop off of the side of the backboard into a two handed windmill, finishing with a reverse slam

Grade: A+

Why: His head was above the rim, combined with the timing of the alley-oop and everything else

Zach Lavine Dunk #5

What it was: Self alley oop from behind the back board into a through the legs reverse dunk

Grade: A+

Why: My jaw dropped when I saw this

DUNK-OFF, ROUND 2

Aaron Gordon Dunk #6

What it was: Double Clutch reverse

Grade: A

Why: Although it was a good dunk, compared to all the A+’s so far… it just doesn’t live up

Zach Lavine Dunk #6

What it was: Between the legs dunk from the foul line

Grade: A+

Why: He never had tried this dunk before but he executed it to perfection
