- Changes are from my last Monday Top 25
- These are my 25 BEST teams RIGHT NOW. Obviously, Penn State does not have a top 25 resume, but the Nittany Lions had a great week. If you are looking for more resume-based, check out my Bracketology.
#1 – Virginia (24-2) — No Change
Virginia is a clear #1, I don’t know how to even make an argument for any team other than the ‘Cavs, who have eight KenPom “A-Level” wins. They rank #1 in the “best” metric (KenPom) and #1 in the “most deserving” metric (Strength of Record).
#2 – Villanova (24-3) — No Change
‘Nova would’ve dropped out of my top five if they lost to Xavier on Saturday, especially after losing @ Providence on Wednesday, but the ‘Cats came in clutch with a win, and might have locked up a one seed.
#3 – Michigan State (26-3) — Up 2
Michigan State has won ten in a row, just behind Grambling for the longest winning streak in the nation.
#4 – Duke (22-5) — Up 4
Even without Marvin Bagley, the Blue Devils picked up a road win over Clemson on Sunday. The Blue Devils are on a roll.
#5 – Texas Tech (22-5) — Up 1
Texas Tech moves into the top five after Cincy and Purdue fall out. The Red Raiders split games with Oklahoma and Baylor this week.
#6 – Purdue (24-5) — Down 2
Purdue’s hot streak has come to a screeching halt. The Boilermakers lost three in a row and were one shot away from losing to Penn State at home on Sunday.
#7 – North Carolina (21-7) — Up 5
UNC has faced the nation’s second-toughest schedule and currently rank 7th in KenPom as well after winning five in a row.
#8 – Cincinnati (23-4) — Down 5
Cincy had climbed as high as #2 in my rankings on Thursday morning, but back-to-back losses to Houston and Wichita State burned the Bearcats.
#9 – Xavier (24-4) — Down 2
If we were rating resumes, this would be a top-four one, but I just don’t trust this Xavier team. The Musketeers are the luckiest team from a power seven conference according to KenPom.
#10 – Gonzaga (25-4) — No Change
Gonzaga stays at #10 after blowing out a couple teams in the 200’s this week.
#11 – Kansas (21-6) — Up 3
Kansas is such a tough team to figure out, alongside home losses to Washington and Oklahoma State sit two wins over West Virginia and more. If they beat Texas Tech on Saturday, the Jayhawks may find themselves in my top five.
#12 – Wichita State (21-5) — Up 5
Wichita State beat Temple and Cincinnati this week. The Shockers almost fell out of my rankings a couple weeks ago, but a second win over Cincy will surely catapult them into the top ten.
#13 – Auburn (23-4) — Down 4
Even after losing to South Carolina on Saturday, the Tigers are still my highest ranked team out of the SEC by a wide margin.
#14 – West Virginia (19-8) – Up 2
Blowing out TCU cancels out the close road loss to Kansas on Saturday.
#15 – Ohio State (22-7) — Down 4
Ohio State lost to Penn State and Michigan this week, but the Buckeyes are likely to be seeded 2nd in the Big Ten Tournament.
#16 – Houston (21-5) — NEW
My third team out of the AAC comes before a single team from the Pac-12. The Cougars own home wins over both Wichita State and Cincinnati, as well as a road win over the #4 team in the conference, Temple.
#17 – Clemson (20-6) — Down 2
Similarly to Xavier, the resume is there but I just don’t trust the Tigers. Even more so now after going 0-2 this week.
#18 – Michigan (22-7) — Up 4
Michigan picked up a win over their rival Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday, already having beaten Michigan State, the Wolverines look primed for a top-five seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
#19 – Arizona (21-6) — NEW
Arizona has four top-50 KenPom wins, but also four sub-50 losses. The win over Arizona State earns the Wildcats a top 20 berth.
#20 – Alabama (17-10) — Up 1
Am I crazy for thinking a team 8-6 in-conference is the 2nd-best team in the SEC? Probably. But the Tide beat Tennessee by 28 last Saturday.
#21 – Tennessee (19-7) — Down 8
The downward spiral continues for Tennessee. They’ve lost two games in the past ten days by a combined 39 points to two sub-40 KenPom teams, and their only win in-between was a three-point scare at home vs #83 South Carolina.
#22 – Baylor (17-10) — NEW
Baylor has won five in a row in the toughest conference in the country, that earns the Bears a spot in the top 25.
#23 – Penn State (19-10) — NEW
Penn State has two victories over Ohio State, and I wouldn’t want to play these guys right now.
#24 – Rhode Island (21-4) — Up 1
So many teams ahead of the Rams lost that they actually move up despite losing @ St. Bonaventure on Friday.
#25 – Kentucky (18-9) — NEW
Kentucky rebounded after losing four in a row by beating Alabama on Saturday.
Dropped Out: Butler, Texas A&M, Saint Mary’s, TCU, Louisville
Others Considered: #26 Nevada, #27 TCU, #28 Florida State, #29 Virginia Tech
