Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku turned a record-breaking night for US keeper Tim Howard into a loss with goals in a 2-1 extra-time win over the US for the Belgians.
The game would go to extra time mainly because of US Goalkeeper Tim Howard who had a record-breaking 16 SAVES for the US.“They were all on their limit,” United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. “[Howard] had an absolutely amazing match.” 3 minutes into the extra period Lukaku dribbled down the right side, passed it to the middle to De Bruyne and the VfL Wolfsburg star’s low shot got past the leg of Howard to give the Belgians a 1-0 lead. “The levee is going to break at some point,” Howard said. In the 105th minute it looked as if Belgium had the game won after Lukaku slammed home a strike in the near corner to give “The Red Devils” a 2-0 lead going into the extra-time half-time. But it wasn’t over for the Americans and in the 107th substitute Julian Green cut the 2-0 lead in half with an incredible volley that the keeper just barely couldn’t save to set up an exciting finish. With just seconds to play Chris Wondolowski had a chance to equalize and send it to PK’s but his strike sailed over the top bar. After the game he tweeted out: I’m gutted to have let down everyone but especially my teammates. It’s been an incredible ride but I know this will make me stronger.
