College Football Week Five Top 25

Rank Team  Change Result Explanation
Alabama (4-0)  Up  Beat Vanderbilt 59-0  Well, that was quick. I moved the Tide down after Clemson’s victory over Louisville. But Alabama went out and one-uped the Tigers. Going on the road, in Nashville, and dominating Vanderbilt. I should mention, Nick Saban took a knee on the one-yard line, so that really should be 66-0. With Ole Miss this week I would expect ‘Bama will add another one to the win column.
Clemson (4-0)  Down  Beat Boston College 34-7  Clemson struggled with BC for two and a half quarters, but the Tigers pulled away late. They drop a spot due to no fault of their own, but Alabama’s win impressed me enough to move the Tide back up to number one. College Gameday will be in town for Clemson’s matchup with Virginia Tech this week.
Oklahoma (4-0)  Down  Beat Baylor 49-41  Oklahoma really struggled with Baylor, a team that lost to Liberty, and I considered dropping them out of my top four, but then pretty much every other team struggled as well, so they just drop a spot to number three after Alabama’s win. Three weeks until the Red River Rivalry.
Penn State (4-0)  None  Beat Iowa 21-19  The thing I struggle with sometimes, is thinking that if that if Trace McSorley’s pass was a little lower, and that pass was batted down, everyone would drop Penn State to like #10, so most of the time, I drop a team for a close win almost as much as I would’ve dropped them for a loss, but I really like this Penn State team, and I’m keeping them in the top four. The defense held up, Saquon Barkley was electric, and to be honest, who else is top four worthy?
Washington (4-0)  Up  Beat Colorado 37-10  Washington! You made it! How nice of you to join us in the playoff hunt. Washington fans have been on my back for weeks because I kept them out of the top ten after that scare against Rutgers, and I said last week, they beat Colorado and they’d be in, here you go.
Wisconsin (3-0)  Up  BYE WEEK  I don’t know. I don’t know about Wisconsin, they’re the biggest question mark on my ballot every week. I had them out of the top ten, then in, then out, then in, and now they are #6. If I’m being honest, I don’t think I’ll have a good read on the Badgers until November when they play Iowa and Michigan.
Ohio State (3-1)  None  Beat UNLV 54-21  Rutgers, Maryland, and Nebraska over the next three weeks will give Ohio State some time to gain some traction in the polls going into the October 28th matchup in the ‘Shoe against Penn State, which could be one of the most important games of the year.
Michigan (4-0)  Up  Beat Purdue 28-10  Michigan continues their trend of playing really good defense and getting through despite some shaky offense. The Wolverines should go into the October 21st matchup against Penn State with a 6-0 record, but will they pass their arch rivals in the meantime?
TCU (4-0)  Up  Beat Oklahoma State 44-31  TCU! WOW! That was surprising. The defense held up against one of the best offenses in the nation, and the Horned Frogs got a signature win, on the road over a top 25 team, West Virginia and Kansas State over the next two weeks could prove tricky, but if they survive the trap games, TCU is a playoff contender.
Georgia (4-0)  Up  Beat Mississippi State 31-3  LSU –> Mississippi State –> Georgia. The essence of the potential Alabama killer gets passed along. I was really impressed by what the Bulldogs did this week. Similar to TCU, potential trap games against Tennessee and Vandy are coming up, but if Georgia wins those, I’ll consider them a contender.
USC (4-0)  Down  Beat California 30-20  Yeah, this is probably one of the more controversial things that I have done. USC is a good team, but they aren’t a playoff contender, and people need to let go of their preseason playoff predictions and realize a team that struggles with Western Michigan, Texas (who they really should’ve lost to) and Cal probably doesn’t deserve to be #5.
Auburn (3-1)  Down  Beat Missouri 51-14  Auburn-Mississippi State this week is going to be fun. An Auburn team that feels they are underrated against a Mississippi State team that just got killed on national TV the week after they got praised by killing someone else on national TV. Winner could challenge for a top ten spot.
Virginia Tech (4-0)  Up  Beat Old Dominion 38-0  Virginia Tech has a chance to jump into playoff contention with a win against Clemson this weekend in primetime. They’ve crept up slowly because they haven’t played anyone since West Virginia, but they have a shot to make a huge splash this week.
Oklahoma State (3-1)  Down  Lost to TCU 31-44  I had Oklahoma State outside of the top 15 preseason when many picked them to be a playoff team, last week after the Pitt win, I finally bought in, and moved the Cowboys up to #6, and then… the lose by two touchdowns at home. Sorry I jinxed you guys.
Notre Dame (3-1)  Up  Beat Michigan State 38-18  Georgia keeps moving up, which means Notre Dame keeps moving up, little by little. The win over Michigan State was good, but USC in South Bend on October 21st will be their big chance at a season changing win. Until then, they probably won’t move much past here.
Miami (2-0)  Up  Beat Toledo 52-30  Hey! Miami is back! Yep, it took until week four for Miami to play an FBS team due to the tragic effects of Hurricane Irma. It looked shaky for a little while, but they pulled away. The ‘Canes will face a RANKED DUKE FOOTBALL TEAM on Friday.
Louisville (3-1)  Up  Beat Kent State 42-3  Louisville took out their anger on Kent State, the Thursday night game against NC State in a couple weeks is going to be fun, we’ll see if the Wolfpack are really a Top 25 team, or if Lamar Jackson was just carrying the Cardinals during this 3-1 start to the year.
Mississippi State (3-1)  Down  Lost to Georgia 3-31  Mississippi State is going to come out angry against Auburn on Saturday, and I am excited. Only one team can be the #2 in the West, and there is a good chance that is decided this week. However, a loss could send the Bulldogs out of the top 25.
USF (4-0)  Up  Beat Temple 43-7  43-7 over a Temple team that had a double-digit win season last year, pretty impressive. The Bulls don’t play UCF or Memphis during the regular season, October 28th against Houston will be the biggest test for the potential New Year’s Six favorite.
Washington State (4-0)  Up  Beat Nevada 45-7  At home, in primetime, against a USC team that I think is pretty overrated. It’s Luke Falk’s time to shine. The Friday night contest with the Trojans is going to be fun, but afterwards, the Cougars have Oregon, Cal, and Colorado. Back-to-back-to-back top 40 teams.
Duke (4-0)  NEW  Beat North Carolina 27-17  No, you didn’t click on my college basketball preview (which should get kicked off soon) Duke is ranked higher than Florida State. Unlike some 4-0 teams, the majority of the Blue Devil’s wins are against power-five opponents, that earns them a spot.
Florida State (0-2)  Down  Lost to NC State 21-27  It’s hard to rank a team like Florida State. Had they played the schedule of a Virginia Tech, there is no doubt in my mind that they would be 4-0 and still ranked in the top four, the ‘Noles take on Wake Forest this week, and a loss there would cause me to lose faith in this season for FSU.
LSU (3-1)  Down  Beat Syracuse 35-26  BYU is not good, and the dominating game against BYU is what led to me putting the Tigers in my top ten. I considered dropping them out completely after the team they got killed by got killed, Florida in early October will be a loser leaves the Top 25 game.
UCF (2-0)  NEW  Beat Maryland 38-10  Here it is! My obscure top 25 team nobody has ranked. In Week Two it was Mississippi State, and the week after they beat LSU. UCF has an opportunity for a big win this week, against conference foe Memphis (who holds a win over UCLA) we’ll see if the Golden Knights can prove me right.
Florida (2-1)  Down  Lost to Kentucky 27-28  Florida is just… I don’t know. Antonio Callaway might not play again this year, he might not play ever again to be honest, and the Gators are hanging on by a thread. I kept them in my top 25 after the loss to Michigan, but my good will has just about reached it’s limit for the Gators. I’ll be interested to see if Luke Del Rio can lead the offense better than Franks or Zaire.
